The hospitality of the Balti people is one of the highlights of any trip to Skardu. To ensure you have a respectful and positive interaction, it's helpful to be aware of a few local customs.
Dress Modestly
While Skardu is a tourist-friendly area, it is still a relatively conservative region. It is advisable for both men and women to dress modestly. This means covering your shoulders and knees. Women will feel more comfortable wearing loose-fitting trousers or long skirts and carrying a scarf (dupatta), which is especially important when visiting mosques.
Ask Before Taking Photos
The people and landscapes are incredibly photogenic, but always ask for permission before taking a close-up photograph of someone, especially women. A simple gesture with your camera and a smile is usually enough. Respect their decision if they decline.
Greetings
A simple "Assalam-o-Alaikum" (peace be upon you) will be met with a warm smile everywhere you go. The local Balti greeting is "Juley," which is also widely understood and appreciated.
Interacting with the Opposite Gender
Public interactions between men and women who are not related are generally formal and reserved. When interacting with someone of the opposite gender, a polite nod and a smile are appropriate greetings. Avoid physical contact like shaking hands unless the other person initiates it.
Accept Hospitality
You will likely be invited into a local home for a cup of tea. Accepting this hospitality is a sign of respect and a wonderful opportunity to experience the local culture. Even if you can only stay for a few minutes, it's a gesture that will be greatly appreciated.
By following these simple tips, you'll not only show respect for the local culture but also open the door to more meaningful and memorable interactions during your Skardu trip.
