Kharpocho, meaning "The King of Forts" in Balti, has been the silent guardian of Skardu for over a thousand years. Its strategic location on a hilltop overlooking the confluence of the Indus River provides a commanding view of the entire valley, a view that was crucial for its defense.
Ancient Origins
The fort is believed to have been built by the Maqpon dynasty of Baltistan in the 8th century, though some legends attribute it to Alexander the Great (a common myth for many ancient forts in the region). It served as the seat of power for the rulers of Skardu for centuries.
A Fortress of Legend
The fort is steeped in legend. It was famously besieged by the Dogra army of Kashmir in the 19th century. The story goes that the Dogra general, Zorawar Singh, was unable to capture the fort for a long time. He eventually succeeded through treachery, with some sources claiming a traitor showed his army a secret water source.
Architectural Significance
While now mostly in ruins, the fort's structure shows evidence of Tibetan and Central Asian architectural influences. Its placement on the hill is a marvel of ancient engineering. The steep climb to the top was its primary defense mechanism.
What Remains Today
Today, visitors who make the strenuous hike to the top are rewarded not just with history, but with what is arguably the most spectacular panoramic view in Gilgit-Baltistan. You can see the entire Skardu town, the vast sandbanks of the Indus River, and the surrounding Karakoram peaks stretching out to the horizon. A visit to Kharpocho is a step back in time and a must-do for any visitor to Skardu.
