Skardu is the trekking capital of Pakistan, but you don't need to be a seasoned mountaineer to enjoy its beauty on foot. Here are three relatively easy day hikes perfect for beginners and families.
1. Hike to Upper Kachura Lake
This is perhaps the most rewarding short hike in Skardu. Starting from the road near Shangrila Resort, it's a 15-20 minute downhill walk through a beautiful pine forest to the pristine shores of Upper Kachura Lake. The path is clear and easy to follow. You can then spend time enjoying the serene lake before making the gentle climb back up.
2. The Kharpocho Fort Trail
The hike up to Skardu Fort (Kharpocho) is a bit more strenuous but offers the best views of the city. It's a steep, 30-45 minute climb on a well-trodden path. Take your time, carry water, and you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Indus River and the entire valley.
3. Marsur Rock Trek
For those looking for a slightly more challenging but still manageable day hike, the trek to Marsur Rock is a great option. It's a few hours of trekking that takes you to a stunning viewpoint overlooking the confluence of the Indus and Shyok rivers, with incredible views of the surrounding peaks. It's a great way to experience the high-altitude landscape without committing to a multi-day expedition.
Always remember to wear sturdy shoes, carry water and snacks, and tell someone your plans. Our guides can accompany you on any of these hikes to ensure your safety and enrich the experience.
